STIGMA
Post-pitch story
Ariana Vargas founded STIGMA in 2020 to make talking about mental health easier — a peer-to-peer app where people share asynchronous text, audio and video messages of support. The app launched in August 2022 and, within about four months, was named Google's "Best App for Good" — a remarkable early validation. Vargas pitched on the show in April 2023, describing a mid-Techstars pivot from a consumer app toward a workplace product. But the pivot didn't save it. In December 2023, Vargas announced on LinkedIn that she was winding STIGMA down — candidly noting the company still had money in the bank, but that market conditions, business-model challenges and her own mental health made it the right call. PitchBook lists the company as out of business by April 2024. Total funding was modest — around $120,000 in pre-seed and grant money. Vargas has since moved into brand and events leadership. STIGMA's ending is a reminder that even award-winning apps with real social impact face brutal business math.
