David Matthews
Pitched on the show
Dotcal
Post-pitch story
David Matthews founded Dotcal in 2021 to take on Calendly — a scheduling tool with a design-first sensibility, pitched on the show's "Calendar Wars" episode in March 2023. The company had raised about $850,000 in seed funding and was still actively promoting itself as late as September 2023, with a Product Hunt presence and a freemium pricing model. But the calendar wars are brutal, and Dotcal appears to be a casualty: PitchBook lists the company as out of business as of January 2024. We should note the evidence isn't airtight — no founder announcement or press coverage confirms the shutdown, and some databases still list the company as active — but the trail goes quiet right around that date, and the product is no longer being promoted. Competing with Calendly was always a David-versus-Goliath bet, and this time Goliath won. If you know more about what happened to Dotcal or where David Matthews landed, send us a tip.
