Josh Muccio
Pitched on the show
The Pitch
Post-pitch story
For episode 101, the show did something it had never done: host Josh Muccio pitched his own business — The Pitch itself — to a panel of investors. To understand why, you need the show's wild corporate history. The Pitch launched independently in 2015, was acquired by Gimlet Media in 2017, and became part of Spotify when Spotify bought Gimlet in 2019. Then, in 2022, Spotify cancelled the show as part of its podcast pullback. Most shows would have died there. Instead, Muccio negotiated to buy the rights back, and in late 2022 relaunched The Pitch as an independent production — which is what the episode 101 pitch was really about: funding the show's second act as an independent business. The gamble worked. The Pitch is still publishing new seasons as an independent show, with Josh and Lisa Muccio running it themselves, supported by listeners and sponsors rather than a streaming giant. It's the rare media property that went corporate, got cancelled, and came back — a post-pitch story about the pitch show itself.
