Babyscripts
Post-pitch story
Juan-Pablo Segura pitched Babyscripts as a scrappy prenatal-monitoring app, and the company he co-founded with Anish Sebastian grew into a serious player in virtual maternity care. Based in Washington, DC, Babyscripts extended its Series B to $19 million with backers including Cigna Ventures, Philips and the Texas Medical Center Venture Fund, bringing total funding to about $37 million by late 2021. By then it was monitoring more than 200,000 pregnancies across 30 states, giving doctors remote blood-pressure and weight readings so problems like preeclampsia could be caught earlier. The company has kept going since: it picked up investment from K Street Capital in early 2025 and joined AWS's Health Equity Initiative later that year. Segura, however, is no longer part of the story. Babyscripts publicly stated in January 2023 that he was no longer affiliated with the company. His path since then has been a sharp turn into public service — a run for the Virginia State Senate in 2023, then senior roles in Virginia's Commerce and Trade office, eventually serving as Secretary. His public profile lists a 2026 appointment at the U.S. Department of State. So the startup survived and scaled without its founder, while the founder built an entirely different career. Few Pitch alumni have taken a stranger — or more ambitious — road after the show.
