Calyxeum
Post-pitch story
Rebecca Colett and LaToyia Rucker, two Detroit natives, built Calyxeum as a Black-women-owned cannabis company in a state where the industry rarely looks like them. When they called into the show's helpline episode in 2020, they were cultivators and processors looking for guidance. Since then, they've quietly built a vertically integrated operation: two cultivation facilities in Detroit and Lansing, a processing facility, and products sold in about 25 Michigan dispensaries by 2022. The big milestone came in April 2024, when Calyxeum opened its first retail dispensary, Moses Roses Powered by Calyxeum, in Southwest Detroit — completing the journey from grower to storefront. The company marked the dispensary's first anniversary in April 2025 with new product drops, and both founders are still running it. Notably, Colett and Rucker have done this their own way, deliberately avoiding non-accredited investor money rather than chasing venture rounds in a capital-hungry industry. Calyxeum's story is the kind the show's helpline format was made for: two founders who didn't need a TV deal, just good advice — and then went and built the whole supply chain themselves.
