Monti Kids
Post-pitch story
Zahra Kassam pitched Monti Kids as a subscription that delivers Montessori-based toys matched to a child's exact stage of development, taking the guesswork out of early learning for new parents. After the show, she took the idea to Shark Tank in 2019 and landed a $200,000 deal with Kevin O'Leary — 2.5% equity plus a royalty per box. Real venture money followed, including a $3.5 million seed round backed by LEGO Ventures, which is about as on-brand as investors get. But the economics of physical subscription boxes are unforgiving. In mid-2023, Kassam announced Monti Kids was winding down, citing high manufacturing costs, fulfillment challenges, and founder burnout. The brand is now dormant. Monti Kids had one of the best post-pitch runs of its season — a Shark Tank deal, serious VC backing, tens of thousands of families reached — and its honest, public wind-down is a reminder that even well-funded, well-loved products can lose to the math of making and shipping physical things.
